The company 

The client had a vision to be the blood center “without equal” in their geographical region, discovering new ways to save more lives. 

Their needs

The client requirement was to identify and remove all possible waste from their processes in order to be able to invest more time in the development and delivery of their Business Vision. They had decided to use Lean Six Sigma (LSS) improvement methodology to achieve this goal and wanted to become self-sufficient as quickly as possible. They contracted Paloma and we helped them to develop and deliver a programme to create the required internal capabilities.  A Master Black Belt (MBB) and 26 Black Belts (BB) were selected for training in the appropriate tools and techniques.

How we helped

Working with the in house deployment leader (the “to be” Master Black Belt) we created a bespoke LSS Black Belt training programme alongside the business executive committee. Two Waves of BB training were delivered to employees representing all areas of their business. A 5S programme was also introduced alongside to reinforce the culture change required.


The deployment leader successfully certified as an MBB, over $3 million worth of savings were identified and the client became self-sufficient in  the application of LSS improvement methodologies. Some examples of training projects completed are listed below:- 

  • Improved  sequencing first pass yield
  • Reduced repeat rates related to a specific assay by 54%
  • Reduced a technology customer’s salvage plasma losses by 49%
  • Reduced product ordering lead time from 8 days to 6 days
  • Increased recovered plasma volume
